Welcome to the Ballroom would have definitely been better… or at least watchable if it was a shoujo show. The shounen hard work and teamwork approach just felt awkward in the context of dancing and most character interactions were so cringeworthy I couldn’t even finish the show.

Why in the context of dancing? Ballroom dancing is a hard sport and they depicted it very well I think.

The sexless shounen approach to narrative completely undermines the romantic aspect of dancing. It feels very dry when all the anime cares about is technicals and characters barely display human traits. I bet this kind of premise would have been much more interesting in the form of shoujo manga/anime.

There is nothing romantic about competitive ballroom dancing. It’s hard work, sweat, tears, long hours in front of a mirror. The anime depicts the sport perfectly. It’s just as hard a sport as football or swimming or volleyball. So I don’t see why this anime should be treated as a shoujo when there is no point in doing so. The focus is on the sport and not a romantic relationship between characters.
