Despite being a massive dungeon crawler re-using the same dungeons from the previous games (for the third blasted time), Sora no Kiseki the 3rd is somehow as good — if not a better game — than its predecessors.
By doing away with the endless town exploration and centering on actually interesting characters (pretty much solely the people on the cover) and offering some surprisingly dark stuff (there’s some seriously fucked up shit going on with Renne’s and Kevin’s backstories) the story of this installment captivated me more than the prequels, and I even got kinda emotional about the whole Joshua/Estelle/Renne relationship in the end.
I just wish I remembered the original Kiseki a bit better. Ten years is a long time, haha.
Positive: | Negative: |
Surprisingly endearing 2D sprites | Low quality artwork |
Fantastic OST | No voice-acting |
Interesting, likable, even relatively profound characters (on the cover) | A lot of annoying stereotypical characters (not on the cover) |
Very-well written dialogue | The long flashbacks of characters other than Estelle and Renne are pretty boring |
A fairly interesting story that concentrates on Kevin’s dark past | Recycles old content |
Relatively satisfying turn-based game-play | Some difficulty issues, most of the battles are either too easy or insta-kill cheap |
