The Naked and the Dead reads a lot like those thought provoking movies which are more about the nature and atmosphere war, than action (The Deer Hunter, Platoon) and offers a wide variety of interesting and profound characters to follow as they struggle through war that they themselves do not really understand. It might not be telling the most original story, but it certainly makes one experience the confusing and overwhelming nature of a large scale conflict.
