Contrary to its name, Ping Pong: The Animation is not as much about the sport itself as about the destructive nature of competition. It’s about complex realistic characters having their dreams crushed and lives consumed by ping pong, and their quest to rediscover that original innocent spark that made them fall in love with the sport to begin with.
Unlike most happy-go-lucky anime, this one tries to paint a realistic love-hate relationship between the characters and their activities with many ups and downs. The show is not exactly edge-of-the-seat exciting material, but it is a very thought provoking and ultimately interesting experience. Definitely check it out if you are into mature intelligent shows which attempt new things.
